Houttuynia cordata (also known as heartleaf) has long been used in herbal treatments and in K-beauty, known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It also helps to tighten and tone the skin, improving texture and soothing any redness while balancing out sebum production to reduce oil. Plus, houttuynia cordata has polysaccharides which draw moisture into the skin, keeping it hydrated and smooth. 

Safe and gentle for sensitive skin types, this is particularly great for acne-prone skin and oily, dehydrated skin. Undergone 2500 hours of fermentation, 97 percent Houttuynia Cordata extract and allantoin help soothe stressed or sensitized skin, while added Cica complex helps repair and rebuild damaged skin.

The main active components in the plant are these fancy chemicals called flavonoids. Houttuynia cordata specifically has a good amount of polyphenolic flavonoids, four common ones being quercetin, quercitrin, hyperoside, and rutin. All of these exhibit anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties. Quercitrin has also been shown to decrease damage from UVB rays, which is an added bonus. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that the flavonoid content of this extract can depend on if the extract is taken from the roots or the leaves, as well as if it’s a water extraction or an alcohol extraction.
